The TEDxManhattan Fellows include an artist, technology innovator, urban farmer and educator, and represent the wide range of work being done in the food movement. Read on to find out the projects they’re working on.
Stefani Bardin is a media maker exploring the intersection of art, technology, science, visual culture and community. She is currently engaged with a body of work entitled The Pharmacology of Taste that looks at the role of technology on our food systems. She is currently in residence at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in New York.
M2A™: The Fantastic Voyage = is an immersive installation built around the first ever clinical study to use the M2A™ Capsule and SmartPill wireless gastroenterology devices to look at how the human body responds to protocols examining processed versus whole foods. The M2A™ Capsule records video and the SmartPill collects time, pressure and pH from within the GI tract. The installation will include projection of the visual data from the M2A, sound design of the informational data from the Smart Pill and artificial food scents simulating the meals used in the clinical study. http://eyebeam.org/people/stefani-bardin
Erica Dhawan is a joint Harvard Kennedy School/MIT Sloan MPA/MBA candidate and MIT Legatum fellow 2010 with a passion for international development and women’s rights. Erica is currently co-incubating SupplyChange, a fair trade fruit company that sources directly from farming cooperatives and captures the excess supply of small-scale, multicrop farmers through appropriate mobile technologies and local processing innovations. Previously, Erica was the founder of Acumen Fund’s global chapter volunteer network, which started with a couple of volunteers and has expanded to thousands of members who have formed chapters in cities including New York, London, San Francisco, and Dubai. Erica has also helped launch an Indian education social enterprise dedicated to bring innovative tools to schools in rural India. She started her career at Lehman Brothers in Foreign Exchange and graduated from the Wharton School in Business & Public Policy.
Wayne LaBar is Vice President of Exhibitions and Featured Experiences at Liberty Science Center (LSC). He is also Principal‐in‐Charge of LSC Experience Services, which helps design and develop science centers and museums around the world. LSC’s exhibitions are recognized as having succeeded in making the Center’s informal experiences more relevant to guests’ everyday lives and global issues; educating and inspiring action; addressing ongoing developments in science and technology and enhancing the Center’s learning and aesthetic environment ‐ redefining the role of a modern science center.
Currently, Wayne and his team are working on Cooking: the Exhibition, 13,000 sq. ft. exhibition that will open in the NYC/NJ area at Liberty Science Center in the fall/winter of 2011. Two touring versions ‐ 7,000 sq. ft. and 2,000 sq. ft. ‐ will begin to travel across the country to science and children’s museums in 2012. The intent is to provide an overview of the experimentation, new technologies, scientific basics, health connections and cultural significance of the innately human activity of cooking. With popular cultural interest in food and cooking, along with the challenges our society faces in the areas of nutrition, obesity and the environmental impacts of how we feed ourselves, Cooking will fulfill LSC’s goal of creating a true exhibition of relevance. LSC believes that this experience, designed for families, school groups and those interested in food and cooking, offers the opportunity to impact how and what people choose to prepare their daily sustenance.
Stacey Murphy is the founder of BK Farmyards, a decentralized urban farming network based in Brooklyn. She is an architect and engineer and has spent the last two years managing high-yield micro-farms and teaching sustainable agriculture to teens. Her architecture experience has led to theorizing on how best to build a local and just food system. Currently, BK Farmyards operates from 1.5 acres spread across 6 different sites including a 1-acre Youth Farm at the High School for Public Service with farmers market; a 50 hen operation with a 15-member egg CSA; several backyard farms with CSAs; and rooftop honeybees. www.bkfarmyards.com
